Rebuilding HP NetRAID Hot Swap Hard Drive on a HP NetRAID Controller - HP Servers

Steps to rebuilding a hot swap hard drive that is configured on a HP NetRAID Controller.

Rebuilding a Hot Swap Hard Drive Configured on a HP NetRAID Controller (excluding the HP NetRAID-4M)

Summary of steps to take before rebuilding a hot swap hard drive:

1.       If the server's array is functional even though it may be in a "degraded" state and the server can boot and run the operating system, get a complete backup first.

2.       Check if there are errors on all hard drives in the array.

3.       Check the firmware on all hard drives in the array.

4.       Make sure the failed drive shows a capacity size. (If it shows 0MB, then the drive needs replaced.)

The following HP Netservers have hot swap hard drives: HP Netserver LM, LS, LD Pro, LC II (hot swap model only), LC 3, LC 2000, LPR, LP 1000r, LP 2000r, LH/LH Plus, LH Pro, LH II, LH 3, LH 4, LH 3000, LH 6000, LX Pro, LXR 8000, LXR 8500, LT 6000r.

Using HP NetRAID Assistant to Perform a Manual Rebuild

If you are within the operating system and you have HP NetRAID Assistant installed, here are the steps to check for the firmware and to check for any errors on the hard drives:

1.       Open HP NetRAID Assistant.

2.       Highlight the failed drive and right-click it, then select Properties. The Physical Drive Property window will appear.

3.       Under "Device Identification" write down the "Revision".

4.       After doing this, right click on the failed drive and choose "Rebuild". The drive should begin to rebuild at this point.

Using the NetRAID Express Utility to Perform a Manual Rebuild

1.       If you are in NetRAID Express Tools, first make sure the server will boot with the failed drive. If so, then get a complete system backup.

2.       Shutdown and reboot the server and go into "CTRL-M" when you see "For experienced user's, select CTRL-M for NetRAID Express Tools". You should be at the Management Menu when you enter CTRL-M.

3.       At the Management Menu, select "Objects"

4.       Select "Physical Drives"

5.       Use the arrow keys to highlight one drive at a time. Press the SPACE BAR, and then press F2 for drive information. For each drive, write down the size, firmware, and Media Errors and Other Errors.

6.       Use the arrow keys to highlight one or more physical drives to be rebuilt.

7.       Use the Spacebar to select (or deselect) the drive to be rebuilt.

8.       Press F10 to start the rebuilding process.

9.       HP recommends NOT rebooting the server until the array has successfully rebuilt completely!
